Historical Background

San Dieguito River Park's Sikes Adobe page says Zenas Sikes began establishing the farm site around 1870. A preservation-project page by IS Architecture similarly describes the farmhouse as having been built about 1870, during the American Era from 1849 to 1900.

The restoration context points to a broader farmstead rather than a single isolated building. IS Architecture says the restoration objectives were tied to a period of significance from 1868 to 1899, with attention to the Sikes-era configuration of the main building, outbuildings, and landscape features.

Designation And Location

San Dieguito River Park describes the Sikes Adobe Farmhouse as a State Point of Historic Interest and a City of San Diego historic site. A City of Escondido cultural-resources PDF separately lists "Zenas Sikes Adobe" at 12655 Sunset Drive, with the designation code PHI in a table of significant historical sites. The same City PDF defines PHI as California Point of Historical Interest.

The California Office of Historic Preservation explains that California Points of Historical Interest are sites, buildings, features, or events of local city or county significance. That OHP source is policy context only; it does not identify Sikes Adobe by itself. Ownership And Preservation

San Dieguito River Park's source says the City of San Diego Water Department owned the farmhouse from 1925 to 2008. It also says the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority purchased the property for $170,000 from the County of San Diego.

The same San Dieguito River Park source says the house burned in the Witch Creek Fire in October 2007, except for the adobe walls. IS Architecture says San Dieguito River Park oversaw a multiyear effort to restore and reconstruct the farmhouse, and says the resource was restored and reconstructed in 2010.

Interpretation And Recent Activity

The 2025 San Dieguito River Park accomplishments page gives evidence that Sikes Adobe remained part of the park's public interpretation work in that reporting period. It says San Dieguito River Park led historical and interpretive tours at Sikes Adobe for groups including the Historical Society, senior centers, school groups, and community members. It also says the park led weekly tours of the Sikes Adobe Farmhouse.

Those statements are intentionally treated as 2025 accomplishments-page facts, not as current tour availability. The same accomplishments page says permitting and design continued on the Sikes Pavilion project with Escondido Community Foundation funding. The source spells the project name as "Sikes Pavillon"; this page uses the ordinary "Pavilion" spelling while preserving that spelling note below.
